SUMMARY:WUR Open Science Day 2026 - “Quality over Quantity?” Open Science & Publication Culture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of inspiration and discussion\, and discover how open science can shape and strengthen publication culture at Wageningen University & Research.\n  \nRegister here\n  \nProgramme:\nKeynote Talks: Inspiration from outside WUR\nProf. dr Paul Boselie\nChief of Open Science\, Utrecht University (UU)\nPaul will share how Utrecht University is working to make open science part of academic life\, from research assessment to recognition and rewards. As part of the Universities of the Netherlands working group on publication culture\, Paul will discuss the state of open science in Dutch universities\, what it takes to build a supportive open science culture\, and how university publication practices can evolve to reflect these values. \nProf. dr Marieke Adriaanse\nRecognition and Rewards Ambassador\, Academia in Motion Programme\, Leiden University\nMarieke will introduce Leiden’s Academia in Motion Programme\, which uses an evidence-informed approach to foster a transition towards better and broader quality criteria for research. As a contributor to LUMC’s new PhD Thesis Framework\, Marieke helped the institution shift to an improved quality assessment for PhD thesis\, which now includes a one-published-paper requirement. Using this case as an example\, she will discuss how we can move beyond traditional methods for assessing scientific careers without compromising the quality of our research or institutional standing\, and offer some strategies to facilitate such cultural change.\n  \nInteractive Panel Discussion: Publication Culture at WUR\nWhat can Wageningen University & Research do to foster a publication culture that values openness\, collaboration\, and quality? In this interactive session\, the keynote speakers will join Dean of Research Edith Feskens and a panel of WUR colleagues to discuss the WUR publication culture and areas for change.\n  \nShowcase: Open Science at WUR\nGet inspired by a showcase of Open Science initiatives across Wageningen University & Research. From Citizen Science projects to innovations in Open Education and data sharing\, colleagues will present how openness is being put into practice in diverse ways. Discover inspiring projects\, meet the people behind them\, and learn how you can take part or apply similar approaches in your own work.\n \nBe part of the conversation and help shape a more open and collaborative publication culture at WUR.\n  \nRegister here\n  \nOrganised by the WUR Open Science & Education Programme and Open Science Community Wageningen

SUMMARY:OSC-W | The Open Lab: Hacking and Building Laboratory Instruments for Better Science
DESCRIPTION:Join us for lunch on June 25th to explore the potential of open hardware and software in scientific research at WUR. This meeting welcomes anyone interested in understanding research at WUR related to open hardware and software. It is ideal for those looking to learn about these topics\, gain insights\, or consider possible costs and benefits. \nFrom breaking vendor lock-ins to creating customised\, cost-effective solutions\, we will explore how modifying and building laboratory instruments can lead to more adaptable\, efficient research tools. \nVincent de Boer (Human and Animal Physiology) and Johannes Hohlbein (Laboratory of Biophysics) will share their experiences and perspectives\, providing insights into overcoming software limitations\, reducing costs\, and developing equipment tailored to specific research needs. \nWhether you are interested in technical strategies or practical applications\, this session will provide valuable ideas on making laboratory instrumentation more open\, accessible and effective.

SUMMARY:OSC-W | How Not to Fool Yourself in Science: Ensuring Reliability in Research
DESCRIPTION:In the era of open access\, our ability to share our findings widely also comes with the responsibility of ensuring their reliability. How do we\, as scientists\, avoid common pitfalls that lead to unreliable results? How can we enhance the reliability of our work and increase trust and transparency in science? \nJoin us for a discussion exploring how different WUR science groups uphold the standards of replicability in their work and exchange ideas\, share challenges\, and build solutions to strengthen the foundations of good\, open science. \nWith new funding opportunities of up to €200\,000 announced by Open Science NL (see below) designed to support replication research\, this is a great opportunity to learn more and connect with fellow scientists who are passionate about advancing the quality and transparency of science. \nSee you on March 4th!
